Billie Jean is featured in our May Newsletter.

She needs a very special home.

Billie Jean was found walking along the highway in Buellton. Her microchip was registered to Las Vegas, Nevada! Unfortunately, the contact information was no longer valid. Try as they might, no one was able to locate her original family.

Billie Jean is an incredibly intelligent 9 year old spayed female Border Collie. Over her three years at DAWG, she has proven to be extremely loyal and affectionate once you have established a relationship with her. In late 2008 and again in early 2010, she experienced a slipped disk in her lumbar spine. Each time, she responded well to periods of strict exercise restriction and steroid therapy. Both incidents seemed to have been brought on by very high impact exercise after long periods of sedentary behavior. For this reason, it is imperative that Billie Jean receive consistent low impact exercise; such as a leisurely, 30 minute, leash-controlled daily walk. Please do not challenge her with high impact off-leash activity… or with the temptations of the dog park or beach.

Outside of her daily walking routine, she would love to settle in to a restful lifestyle. She would love to hang out with her owner in the home or at the office, in peaceful and restful surroundings. She would be happy as the only pet in the household, absolutely focused upon her owners. She does enjoy the company of small dogs, but usually not cats or with dogs her size or larger.

Billie Jean has had a life filled with challenges, but she has overcome them because she is tough, resourceful, and intelligent. We think that now she yearns for the simple life: a home to call her own, and a human to love.

A thick and solid, but gentle boy.  Smart, knows basic commands, well mannered, sweet sociable disposition. Fine family dog.

Active, athletic, smart, always ready to go on an adventure. Good with kids and other dogs and loves to snuggle. Possibly the most tennis ball focused dog we know! An all around great dog for an active family. Enjoys playing with other dogs, including his DAWG buddy Chile. No cats, please.

Sweet gentle boy, good with other polite dogs. Extremely smart and willing to please, he will need a good amount of exercise. Bandit is a very shy fellow, he will need a calm, patient household.

Lucy is a Border Collie-Akita mix that I adopted through DAWG about a month and a half ago. She loves Hendry's Beach, the Jesusita trail and Red Rock. She is a real treat.

I just wanted to give you and update on how Jake (the Border Collie formerly known as Drake) is doing…..

2 little negatives: On Day 1 he peed on my armchair and on day 2 he pooped in the living room, but on a positive note, I told him off and he hasn't had any accidents since. I figured he had to get used to where he could do his business and no dog is perfect………………………………but Jake is damn close.

Here are the positives: He is great with my kids. It seems like we have had him for ages. He has fitted right in and loves playing ball with them.

The residents at the retirement home where I work love him and he has been fantastic there. He doesn't get under their feet, lets them pet him and amuses them by chasing tennis balls and pouncing on shadows. I don't know if you saw him do this, but he notices shadows on the ground and leaps in the air and pounces on them. The residents think he is marvelous and nobody can understand why he was given up. Yesterday, I walked into our Lounge and 6 residents said, in unison, "Hi Jake." Someone later pointed out that nobody acknowledged me.

He is so obedient. When I tell him to lie down, he does so immediately. On only his second day with me, we were at work when I told him to lie down as I was helping our frailest residents into the dining room. Even though he kept on losing sight of me, he hadn't moved by the time I returned 10 minutes later.

I have only been working there for 6 weeks, but I have seen some residents smile more with Jake than they have done in the last month and a half. He is having a great effect on a lot of people.

BTW, the bed in the photo that I emailed you has hardly been used. He has been sharing my futon. He is the first bed partner I've had since my wife left me and is a lot more affectionate than she ever was!!!!!!!!!!! Just kidding.

Thanks again ladies

love

David and Jake
